Charity ball: Temple “St. Evtimiy, Patriath Tarnovski”

Charity ball will be held in Tarnovo on January 20, 2017to raise funds for the completion of the university temple “St. Evtimiy, Patriarch Tarnovsky”. For this purpose, a donation account for the noble cause was also opened.
This year marks the 700th anniversary of the birth of St. Evtimiy Tarnovski - the most famous patriarch of Bulgaria and the last predecessor of the Church of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, a famous clergyman, scribe and Orthodox saint, one of the greatest Bulgarians and personalities of the Middle Ages. He was born in 1317 in Tarnovo, died in 1402 in the Bachkavsky Monastery. Patriarch Euthymius is canonized as a saint, and his memory is honored on the same day as the memory of St. Euthymius the Great — January 20.
The idea of building a temple in honor of Patriarch Euthymius arose spontaneouslyduring a friendly wine meeting between Stefan Sharlopov, Bishop Grigory and former Rector of Tarnovo University Prof. Ivan Haralampiev. They created an association, Stefan Sharlopov donated 300,000 leva for the construction of the temple, the municipality of Tarnovo — 50,000, the University — 50,000, friends — another 37,000. On his fiftieth birthday, Sharpolov asks his guests not to give him gifts, but funds for the temple. The collected amount of 28,000 also contributes to the general account.
“The church already has it, but it is under rough construction, and so many more funds will be needed to complete it.”, says Sharlopov, who wants to turn the idea of erecting a temple of St. Patriarch Evtimius in a national cause — because nowhere in Bulgaria is there a church in the name of the last patriarch of the Second Bulgarian State.
Initially, the idea was that the temple should be located where the monument to the brothers Cyril and Methodius is, but three years later a new place for the church was consecrated - right next to the library of the vosa. “Every student entering the University will pass by the temple of St. Evtimius Tarnovski”, explains Sharlopov. Thus, the connection between the temple with the monumental figure of St. Patriarch Euthymius and the monument of the Holy Brothers — patrons of the University.
The temple is three-nave, triapse, domed, with a vault and a portico in front of the central entrance. The church will accommodate about 200 lay people. The architectural project provides for a chapel under the nave, which will bear the name of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius. The first sod was made by Metropolitan Gregory of Veliko Tarnovowho, in the presence and with the blessing of the Holy Synod, laid the three cornerstones, the cross and the chronological note in the foundations of the future Church.
